Diaries of physical activity are used in many studies to estimate energy expenditure, because it varies with activity level.
The index of resting energy expenditure is thebasal heart rate. The amount of energy spent on rest is influenced by a number of factors. The highest rates of energy expenditure per unit of body weight occur during infancy and decline through childhood.
